Enhancing intermodal freight through digital collaboration
At the start of 2025, ECTA, UIRR (International Union for Road-Rail Combined Transport), and ERFA (European Rail Freight Association) launched a collaborative Intermodal Digitalisation Workgroup with the mission to set the foundation for an effective digital collaboration across the entire intermodal supply chain. Over the last 9 months, the workgroup has paved the way towards a more common digital data model based on intermodal freight standards and is now very proud to announce its 3 new digital best practice guidelines. The aim of these guidelines are to:
- Streamline communication and data exchange across all intermodal stakeholders
- Reduce administrative costs and paperwork
- Enable seamless, real-time logistics planning and execution
- Enhance the competitiveness of intermodal freight services in Europe
The 3 new digital best practice guidelines can be found via the buttons below and cover the following topics:
- General principles of standardised digital data sharing in intermodal freight transport across all intermodal actors
- Standardise the intermodal booking, gate-in and gate-out processes at terminals
- Standardised digital data sharing between Railway Undertakings, Combined Transport Operators and Terminal Operators.
We want to thank the ECTA-UIRR-ERFA digital workgroup for enhancing intermodal freight transport based upon the described and harmonized digital data models. Next is to further communicate, explain and operationalize these digital guidelines via further collective webinars.
