ECTA Responsible Care KPI results 2024

I, Steve Rowland – ECTA RC Director, am delighted to share that all of the ECTA Responsible Care members were able to get their 2024 KPI results submitted in time for the deadline at the end of February. This was a great achievement compared to previous years and it allowed us to get on with validating and analysing the results.

Validation was also made easier as there were less errors in the numbers which I think is partly down to the additional guidance notes and data validation checks that we included in the forms as well as the training webinar that we held in November to explain the changes.

There will be many opportunities to see the fully published results at the RC workshop in October, The Annual meeting in November and in our Annual Report at the end of the year but, for now, I have included the main headlines;

  • 18% growth in tonnes delivered as a result of acquisitions and inclusion of fuel distribution
  • A further, significant move back to road journeys (58%) with less intermodal journeys
  • An increase in reported injuries with unloading sites continuing to be our main safety concern
  • A reduction in product losses especially plastic pellets
  • 23,400 trucks managed by our RC members (Own and Fully Integrated Subcontractors) of which 95.4% are now Euro VI. Only 1.2% are using alternative, low emission technologies.
  • A significant increase in the use of HVO100 as a fuel with 15% of vehicles using it, either wholly or partially
HVO - RC KPIs

Whilst it is disappointing to see no growth yet in the low emission engine technologies, primarily due to higher investment cost and commercial viability, it is encouraging that many more companies are using HVO100 as a short to medium term way of reducing emissions.

Much could be said about the effect that economic uncertainty and cost pressures are having on sustainability initiatives but we continue to watch closely the developments in this area.

We also continue to push for better safety facilities at some of the unloading sites as the level of injuries being sustained is a significant concern to all of us.
